Safer at Work is delighted to be sponsoring Stu and Adam as they take on the epic Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Rowing Challenge in December 2020!
The Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Rowing Challenge is the premier event in ocean rowing – a challenge that will take Adam and Stu more than 3,000 miles west from San Sebastian in La Gomera, Canary Islands to Nelson’s Dockyard, English Harbour, Antigua & Barbuda.
The annual race begins in early December 2020, with up to 30 teams participating from around the world, helping each other to prepare for the challenge of the almighty Atlantic Ocean. The Atlantic can be a cruel ocean, at times both Stu and Adam will be tethered to the boat in unforgiving swells in excess of 20ft high.
The pair will row for two hours, constantly, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – lasting for 37 days. If/When the boat rolls, the pair roll with it, submerged underwater until the boat rights itself and they find the strength to get back in the seat and start rowing again. This mighty feat will burn in excess of 5,000 calories per day and the duo risk losing 12kg in weight.
As serving fire fighters, Stu and Adam have both had to overcome some form of mental health problems during their working life. Coping with the loss of colleagues at work, the regular pressures of making life and death decisions, whilst attending a wide variety of life threatening incidents, or daily pressures such as keeping a roof over their families’ heads. It is of no surprise then that over the last few years we have all witnessed a dramatic increase in mental health issues in the workplace and both Adam and Stu are determined to do something about it, for everyone’s benefit.
Stu and Adam are aiming to raise awareness of mental health issues in the workplace, reduce the stigma of mental ill health, educate and train people to become Mental Health First Aiders and raise money for their chosen charities: Solent Mind and The Fire Fighter’s Charity.
The duo are aiming to raise £100,000 to donate to the aforementioned charities.
Safer at Work will be repairing their boat named Patience and we are also training the team in composite repair.
During the course of the next few months, we will be documenting its progress and keeping you up to date with Stu and Adam’s efforts in fundraising, and training!
